Attempts to provide information on the make-up of the Serbian population were made as early 2002. Today, countries from the western Balkans have also been asked to supply new and more precise data on their populations. Operations in Serbia have been postponed until October (as they have in Macedonia), while there have been protests against the census in Kosovo (where the operation will be internationally monitored). Croatia and Montenegro have begun their own research according to the agreed schedule, while the process in Bosnia Herzegovina is not expected to begin this year, due to the political and institutional crisis in the country, which is preventing the formation of a central government.
