Project Proposal

Title:Research and Cooperation on Geographic Indications for agro-food products
Priority:1.Economic, Social and Institutional Cooperation
Measure:1.1 - Research and Innovation
Description:Traditional agro-food products constitute the main assets of many deprived rural areas in the Western Balkans. Maintaining their production, despite the rapid changes in food marketing and consumption patterns, is therefore a key issue. Geographic Indications (GIs) have been successfully implemented in the EU and various researches have highlighted their multi-functionality: protection of the name, organisation of the producers and supply chains, impact on other economic activities, on environment and on the social and cultural dynamics in rural areas. In the Western Balkans significant efforts have been devoted for developing the GI system. However, the research community did not yet investigate this area or in a very fragmented way. The various aspects related to the role of GIs in agriculture are therefore rarely included in the academic curricula. The project aims at filling this gap by fostering R&D on the role and impact of GIs in agriculture and rural development.
Partners already involved:none
Partners searched:Research and educational institutions in all countries participating in IPA Adriatic CBC programme. Considering the multi-functionality of Geographic Indications various disciplines are concerned: Agriculture, Human Sciences (e.g. Sociology, Consumer Sciences, etc.), Economy and Marketing. Other partners can be considered, particularly: Regional/national authorities in charge of agriculture, Agencies for Intellectual Property, Associations of producers, NGOs specialized in rural development.
